Saini was arrested by Punjab police after posting about Ludhiana's demography.

The police in Aam Aadmi Party-ruled Punjab arrested an anti-Khalistani activist named Arshdeep Singh Saini on 30th November after he made a post on social media flagging the demographic changes in Ludhiana due to the influx of Bangladeshis.

Confirming Saini’s arrest on Wednesday (3rd December), the Ludhiana Police said that he was arrested for “posting social media content to create disharmony and discord”.

Saini returned from the UK in 2014 and was staying in Punjab’s Rupnagar district. He has a following of 13,000 and describes himself as “Ram Das, Nationalist, Hindu Sikh” on X.

In his now-deleted post on X, which led to his arrest, Saini highlighted that illegal Bangladeshis are migrating to Ludhiana and settling there, pushing a demographic shift in the areas.

“Ludhiana is the first city of Punjab that will witness, if not already, rapid demographic change, as more and more illegal Bangladeshi continue to settle and capture the business ecosystem, starting with fruit & vegetable, and other menial tasks. Increasing number of mosques in the city stand witness,” Saini wrote on X on 27th November.

An FIR was subsequently filed by the Ludhiana Cyber Crime Police against Saini on 28th November under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said that Saini has been using X to share posts that are โ€œprovocative, communal in tone, potentially capable of spreading discord and disharmony in society and inflammatoryโ€. The linked Saini’s posts to a “tool kit to spread disharmony in Punjab at the behest of Pakistanโ€™s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI”.

“The preliminary monitoring by the Cyber Crime Police Station revealed that the objectionable, communal, provocative content capable of spreading discord and disharmony has been targeting various religious groups, including Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims. Furthermore, the responses and the credentials of the followers indicate a planned and deliberate strategy to infuse hatred among various groups and communities in the state of Punjab,” Sharma said.

Notably, Arshdeep Singh Saini frequently exposed anti-India and Khalistabi elements in his social media posts. Before his arrest, he called out the US-based Khalistani JS Dhaliwal on X for supporting Pakistan against India.

“What could be the reason for #Khalistanis having sharp bleeding pain in their butts on India taking Sindh from Pakistan?” Saini wrote on X on 30th November.
