A disturbing incident at Delhi University’s North Campus, a woman was assaulted by a mob during a protest supporting the UGC caste regulations stayed by the Supreme Court. The victim was a YouTuber named Ruchi Tiwari, who was mercilessly assaulted by the caste activists. The incident took place today at the Arts Faculty when the Brahmin woman had gone to cover the protests by SC-ST-OBC activists.
Several videos of the assault have emerged on social media, which show Tiwari being surrounded, grabbed, beaten, and nearly disrobed by a large group of men and women. Eyewitnesses and social media users claim that the mob turned aggressive after learning her name, Tiwari, a common Brahmin surname.

They allegedly shouted phrases like “Yeh Brahmin hai, isko pakdo” (She is a Brahmin, catch her). A man can be heard saying in a video, โmar isko pata chalegaโ (beat her she will learn a lesson). Another voice was saying repeatedly โKoi bol na dena yehan pe, kaat ke phenk dengeโ (Donโt say a word yere, else would cut and through you). Someone was saying that the protests were going on peacefully when she appeared.

Others can be heard saying โarrest and register FIRโ, although it is not clear whether they were demanding action against the mob or Ruchi Tiwari. After the assault, the woman was seen dragged out of the spot by some women. Some police personnel were also present at the spot, but they struggled to rescue her. Later, more police personnel arrived and detained some people after controlling the situation.
Ruchi Tiwari narrated the entire incident in a video after the assault. She said that when she was talking to a reporter at the protest site, suddenly a large group of men and women confronted her. The caste activists claimed that she was the same woman who was present at Jantar Mantar yesterday, and proceeded to assault her.

โThey held my hands, held my neck, pulled by hair, and tried to strangle me,โ Tiwari said. She added that when her coworkers tried to intervene, the mob of men and women assaulted them too, and falsely accused them of touching the women protestors inappropriately.
After Ruchi Tiwari escaped from the attackers and went to the road searching for her friends, she was again surrounded and assaulted. She said that there was a large group of 100-150 protestors, and many of them including several women assaulted her, tore her clothes, while others were making videos.
โThey attacked me only because I am a Brahminโ, Tiwari claimed. She added that the mob said, โshe is Brahmin, catch her, tear her clothes, undress her.โ Ruchi Tiwari asked whether it is the feminism where not single person came forward to protect her when she was being assaulted.
The clash took place during protests in support of the UGC’s (Promotion of Equity in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2026, which have been kept in abeyance by the Supreme Court. The protests were organised by groups like Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and ย All India Students Association.
These rules, notified recently to address caste-based discrimination on campuses, require universities to set up committees and helplines primarily for SC, ST, and OBC students. General category students and groups have strongly opposed them, arguing that they are one-sided, label upper castes as “natural criminals,” and lack safeguards against misuse. The Supreme Court stayed the regulations on January 29, 2026, following petitions and widespread protests.
